Will Mercury Die? Is the Kitty a girls car!!! Oh no!!!!!
« on: May 21, 2007, 07:28:34 AM »

For years everyone has suggested that Ford kill of its Mercury division. The division simply sells rebadged versions of Ford products, that don't usually have higher levels of performance or luxury. The brand has been seen as a waste of valuable resources and a severe drain on the parent company. Lately Mercury has had somewhat of a revitalization.

Mercury now has the best lineup that they have had in years, thanks to the new Mariner and Milan. Most "car guys" still don't care, but according to a recent article in the Detroit News, women do. According to Warren Post of the Washington Post, female buyers are one of the main reasons why the brand still exists.

In his article Post, tells how his wife and assistant both liked the 2008 Mercury Mariner better than the 2008 Ford Escape that they had driven a few weeks earlier. They stated that the Mariner was more fun and different than the Escape. (Most of us know that the Mariner is basically an Escape with a different grille).

Since the Mariner is essentially the Escape it is very interesting that the women actually liked it better. Is Ford actually on to something? Mercury's marketing tends to focus on women and their needs. Can a brand actually survive that is geared towards one sex?

Nice to see that most donít think that anymore.

More news...  Lowest sales since 1960 with only 180,848 vehicles sold in 2006 is making people nervous.  It is rumored that Mercury has no more products in the pipeline and will done by 2012.  All the new products have been canceled.  The Mercury version of the Ford Flex and Taurus X are done!  There are rumors that Mercury plans to bring in imports to replace the US products??

This has been a long topic of discussion and as long as Ford keeps the present track they may. Look Mercury has always been Ford colons with better options and interiors. After the late sixty's Ford stop Mercury from competing against each other this is why the Cougar changed from the Mustang platform in 71 to the Tbird platform until 97. Does Mercury have any vehicle using the current Mustang platform? This why Mercury is in the state it is in,

Now Ford is trying to hush us by launching a new trim option for mercury's.  Dubbed VOGA ó Italian for vogue ó the new trim line is intended to appeal to Mercury's more style-conscious customers.  he VOGA option will add features such as unique color schemes, embroidered leather interior and other subtle design cues to give the air of style to current Mercury vehicles.

I always thought Mercury's were simple Fords with a little more.  More trim, moro color options and a better ride...  This is nothing new...  Will Volga save Mercury?

The Lincoln Mercury National Dealer Council has asked Ford to reveal its future plans for the  marque.

The two sides will sit down at a meeting in September, but the future of Mercury isn't looking so good. Other than new powertrains for the Mercury Mariner and a refreshed Milan there are no new products in the Mercury pipeline.

If this keeps up there may never be another Cougar.   :surr:

The bird is also dead. But still nothing in the pipeline lets hope that Ford does something with Mercury. I personally think that  with Hybrid technology being a big concern for the future that is one reason Ford hasn't announce anything yet.

Well. I think the Automakers are putting their design efforts into making cars more fuel efficient.  All other projects will take a back seat.  For example Chevy has moved it Truck R&D team over to work on fuel efficient cars.  Not that anyone wants one of their trucks anyways...

Well it is official Ford is going to keep Mercury around for a few more years. Ford announced that Mercury would get a couple of smaller and fuel efficient vehicles. Gee dose Capri or Merkur sound familiar the fuel crisis of the 70's spawned those two. Ford has not discuss names or body styles yet just said they will rival other Hybrid technology.
But after reporting losses in eccess of 8.7 billion anything is possible.
